Emperor Maximilian I.
and Kufstein Fortress
The history of Kufstein Fortress is inseparably linked with one name - Emperor Maximilian I. The Habsburg ruler seized the fortification from Bavaria in 1504. However, the Bavarian fortress commandant Hans von Pinzenau did not want to hand over the castle to the emperor that easily. Maximilian I. besieged the fortress and with the, at that time, two most robust cannons in the area – ‘Purlepaus’ and ‘Weckauf’ – weakening the fortress in preparation for attack. After the siege, Maximilian had an impressive fortress built.
The exhibition in the ‘Artillerie Laboratorium’ displays this action-packed period, providing great detail about the events.
