On your very own tour of Kufstein Fortress you get to explore 21 different stations of the impressive outdoor area, which has fortifications typical of fortresses, including the ‘Elisabeth Batterie’ with its cannons and the circular layout. You can also take a look into the almost 60 metre ‘Deep Well’ and suss out the secret of the subterranean rocky path. Finally you can pay a visit to the various museums and the special exhibits, which alternate, and much more.

Since 1998, the Fortress and local history museum took on a completely new guise. Well-known Graz specialist in exhibits and set designer Hans Michael Heger was in charge of the design.

During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the uppermost storey of the Kaiserturm tower in Kufstein Fortress was used as a state prison.

The museum in the Bürgerturm tower houses an extensive collection of exhibits of Tyrol’s Kaiserjäger regiment and Tyrol’s ‘Schützen’. The only free-standing organ in the world is also housed here.

The history of Kufstein Fortress is inseparably linked with one name - Emperor Maximilian I. The Habsburg ruler seized the fortification from Bavaria in 1504.
