Museum in the state prison

Behind bars in Kufstein Fortress

During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the uppermost storey of the Kaiserturm tower in Kufstein Fortress was used as a state prison. Numerous people were imprisoned there. Among them a few VIP prisoners, such as the Hungarian author Ferenc Kazinczy, who wrote about his imprisonment in the book ‘Diary of my imprisonment’. Upon his release he devoted himself to the modernization of the Hungarian language in particular. These days people can walk-into the former cell block in the Kaiserturm tower as part of the museum.
